SMOTCH – Shadows in the Abyss

What if there was never anything to lose?

Darkness. Shadows. Silence. An abyss.

With “Shadows in the Abyss”, SMOTCH dives deep into the darker side of Gothic Rock and Gothic Metal. But this song is not simply about sadness, heartbreak or loss.

It is about something much more unsettling.

What if there was never anything there to lose?

The light in the song is not salvation. It is a searchlight, exposing what hides beneath the surface. The shadows are not the enemy. They are your own contours.

You are the shadow.

And when the protagonist screams into the void, it is not a cry for help. It is a final attempt to prove that an “I” still exists.

But the void swallows the sound.

And with it, perhaps the last proof that anyone is there at all.

A dark musical landscape

Musically, “Shadows in the Abyss” sits somewhere in the darker territory between Gothic Rock and Gothic Metal, with echoes of the melancholic atmosphere associated with bands such as Tiamat, Paradise Lost, Lake of Tears, Katatonia and the darker Finnish Gothic Metal scene.

But SMOTCH is not trying to recreate the past.

The song takes that darkness somewhere else.

One artist. One vision.

Written, performed, produced, mixed and mastered by Stefan Thiel, “Shadows in the Abyss” is a fully independent SMOTCH production.
